More School Leavers Than
University Graduates In Brunei
Bandar Seri
Begawan – University graduates in Brunei are relatively small
compared to the number of school-leavers at 'O' and 'N' level.
Pehin
Dato Haji Suyoi, Deputy Minister of Education, said that this group
should be given guidance and encouraged to carry out activities that
are beneficial to the country.
Unemployed individuals pose a loss
for the country as they can undoubtedly contribute much to the
economic development of the country in various ways if they are
productive.
Pehin
Dato Haji Suyoi was speaking at the opening ceremony of the Ministry
of Education's Career Resource Centre at the Sultan Haji Hassanal
Bolkiah Foundation Complex in Bandar.
The Deputy Minister said that every
employee should have a positive attitude to every job offer.
“Salary should not be the main
criterion in considering a job,” he said.
The Career Resource Centre is
intended to provide school leavers with guidance and counselling, seek
out job opportunities and to equip them with basic job-seeking skills.
At the opening ceremony, the Deputy
Minister urged teachers to be more proactive in guiding the younger
generation in exploring various careers and making informed career
choices.
He also urged students to be
committed to their life goals, and to be motivated to contribute to
their families, society and country.
The Career Resource Centre was born
out of concern with the growing problem of unemployment among school
leavers, especially those who are unable to pursue education at higher
level, and the need for the Ministry of Education to address the issue
by providing this facility.
The Career Resource Centre first
began operation in November 2003.
Currently, the centre houses
materials that cover topics on occupational and education information,
work search, and international work and learning opportunities.
Perhaps, what makes the Career
Resource Centre unique is that officers from the centre actively seek
out job opportunities that are available in various government
departments and private firms, and match employer requirements with
job-seekers that are registered in the centre's database.
The Centre currently has over 600
job-seekers in its database.
According to Doctor Ee Ah Meng, there
are three degree holders registered with the centre, twelve diploma
holders, 21 'A' level, 306 '0' level, 78 'N' level, 11 from religious
institutions, 14 from technical vocational institutions, 89 PMB and 86
others at various stages of education.
Within nine months of operation, the
centre has successfully found employment for 190 applicants.
