Rising Cases Of Stolen Government
Properties Draw Concern
Tutong
– Growing cases of stolen government assets have now become a
major concern.
In the latest incident, facilities
for main pipes, tanks and valve chambers of the Department of Water
Service were stolen from the Bukit Barun Water Treatment Plant in the
Tutong District.
The theft incident could affect the
water supply to consumers nationwide.
More than 60 1220 millimetre
stainless steel harness joints were reported missing from the water
treatment plant.
The replacements of the respective
facilities as well as the fencing gate that are damaged are estimated
to cost more than $100,000.
Awang
Haji Muhd Husin Bin Metassan, Director of Water Service, said that if
any of the joint facilities fails following the theft incident, the
water supply will be interrupted nationwide and the repair works will
take so much time.
After the incident, the Department of
Water Service is taking appropriate measures to prevent the recurrence
of similar such cases.
The department also seeks the
cooperation from the public and contractor to overcome these cases.
Similar incidents also happened at
reservoirs at Kilanas, Jerudong, Kiarong, Dedap, Mengkabau, Wasan and
Telanai.
Stainless steel cover plate inlet
access to reservoir, telemetry cable and lightning protection cable,
reservoir safety guardrail and pipes were stolen.
All the items are stainless steel and
aluminium.
Even though the worth of some of the
stolen items is not that much, the main concern is the exposure risk
on the water quality and interruption of the water supply.
