Asean Regional Forum Promotes Political Stability And Security

Jakarta – Her Royal Highness Princess Hajah Masna, the Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs of Brunei, together with other Foreign Ministers today attended the 11th Meeting of the Asean Regional Forum (ARF) Ministerial Meeting at the Jakarta Convention Centre (JCC).

Also in attendance was the Asean Secretary-General.

The meeting was chaired by the Indonesian Foreign Minister, Hassan Wirajuda. The ARF is composed of the ten Asean member countries, plus Australia, Canada, China, the European Union, India, Japan, Mongolia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, North Korea, the Republic of Korea, Russia and the United States.

The meeting serves as the only multilateral forum promoting political and security dialogue and cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region.

The ARF is a unique form of dialogue on security issues in the Asia-Pacific region.

After the meeting, the Princess and the rest of the Asean Regional Forum delegates proceeded to the Summit Room for luncheon.

According to the ARF's opinion, international terrorism continues to be a key issue as the menace of terrorism could not be conquered overnight.

To date, the discussions at the ARF had focused on the preventive or security aspects such as law enforcement and information exchange so that the region could harden itself as a target against terrorists.

In the afternoon, the Foreign Ministers from the Asean Regional Forum gathered in a Retreat format.

It presents an opportunity for the Ministers to have frank exchange of views.

The meeting also focused its discussion on political and security issues of common concern, which have direct repercussion to regional peace and stability.

Aside from that, the Foreign Ministers also discussed the traditional and non-traditional security issues including terrorism which has a global character.

In this matter, the Ministers agreed to work assiduously to achieve a higher degree of coherence in efforts to deal with political and security issues affecting the region in line with the objectives of the ARF process. -- Courtesy of Radio Television Brunei
