Hooded Robbers Terrorize Couple In
Capital On Thursday Night
BY James Kon and M K Anwar
Bandar Seri
Begawan - A gang of six knife-wielding marauders terrorized a
Chinese couple in a residential area in the Brunei capital on Thursday
midnight and fled with booty worth over B$100,000 in cash, watches and
jewellery.
The victims had already lodged a
police report, they told reporters last night.
The incident took place at a plush
house in Kg Rimba Gadong in the Brunei capital. The couple still dazed
and traumatized by the midnight intruders, related their ordeal to the
Weekend in an interview.
The visibly upset wife said the
robbers were already outside her house around 11.30 pm.
She heard some noise outside the
master bedroom on the ground floor, so she decided to come out and check
the living room. Feeling nothing amiss, she went back to sleep.
The distressed housewife added that
it was not until 12.30 in the morning she felt something strange and
upon opening her eyes, she saw six men surrounding their bed where she
slept with her husband. Some were wearing masks and wielding knives. The rest did not wear hoods.
When she tried to scream, the alleged
robbers quickly jumped on the bed and grabbed hold of the couple.
They then proceeded to tie them up.
Fearing for their lives and the safety of their children sleeping on
the first floor, the couple gave in to their demands and followed
their instructions. From the language and accent of the robbers, the
couple believed they are foreigners.
The intruders apparently came in
through a window and slowly moved their way to the bedroom. They
demanded the key for the safe, and the couple obeyed out of sheer
terror. They warned them of the consequences of not complying.
The robbers then ransacked the place
and made off with all the valuables, including cash, watches, mobile
phones and jewellery estimated over $100,000, the victims claimed.
After the robbers had left, the
couple managed to free themselves and called the police around 1.25 am
who arrived within minutes with Gurkha dogs.
The couple also disclosed that this
was the second time that robbers broke into their home since four
years.
Several of the couple’s neighbors
had also experienced break-ins, they said.
The Borneo Bulletin last year also
carried news on a daring robbery in Jerudong involving five foreign
men. They were said to have managed to enter the house through the
window after climbing over the tall fence around the victim’s house
using a ladder. A couple was also tied up in their bed during the
heist.
The police set up several roadblocks
in the morning following the robbery. --
