By M K Anwar & Lyna Mohammad

Bandar Seri Begawan – Twenty-two foreign workers, including two women fell into the Immigration Department’s dragnet in getting the country rid of unwanted elements on Immigration Day yesterday.

The operation was the 39th 'Ops Buru' implemented by the Immigration Enforcement Section directed at foreigner violating Brunei’s immigration laws.

Nineteen Immigration Enforcement Officers targetted two areas that included a construction site in Bengkurong Masin and a vegetable stall at Jalan Kebangsaan.

Awg Hamdani, Senior Immigration Officer, led the raid.

More than 15 foreigners were detained from several construction sites in Bengkurong Masin after several discrepancies were found in their travel documents.

Some as usual were unable to produce any travel and working documents as they were in the possession of their employers. Some had also tried to run away but were eventually caught by the officers.

Seven other foreigners were issued with special passes requiring them to report to the Immigration Department. From the 22 who were rounded up, 6 foreigners comprising 3 Filipinos, 2 Indonesians and a Malaysian were found with expired visit passes.

All of them were found working in the country under a visit pass, which is an immigration offence. The other 16 foreigners are still being detained pending further investigation.

Also, two employers of these foreign workers were issued with letters asking them to report to the Immigration Department.

It is an offence under Chapter 55 (e) of the Immigration Act to employ or provide work to any immigration offenders. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
