Brunei Joins Asean To Fight
Violence Against Women
Jakarta –
The 37th Asean Ministerial Meeting in Jakarta has come to a
close with a Declaration on the Elimination of Violence against Women.

Masna, the Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs of Brunei, and other Asean Foreign Ministers attended the closing ceremony of the
meeting yesterday afternoon at the Jakarta Convention Centre (JCC).
In a Joint Communiqué at the end
of the meeting, the Foreign Ministers decided to establish an
ASEAN community by 2020.
Under the theme "Striving For Full
Integration of Asean: A Prosperous, Caring and Peaceful
Community", they reaffirmed their countries' commitment to the
vision comprising the Asean Security Community (ASC), the Asean
Economic Community and the Asean Socio-Cultural Community.
The AMM was essential in
discharging their responsibility to assist their leaders chart the
course towards that end, observers said.
The Foreign Ministers said they
were encouraged by the important progress in the development of
the ASC which they believed would lead to an ASEAN that is at
peace with one another and with the world at large.

their capacity to deal with security challenges, |

fortify Asean
relations with Dialogue Partners and other friends, and enhance Asean's role
as the ARF's primary driving force. |
In the Joint Communiqué, the Foreign
Ministers also welcomed the significant progress in realizing the
establishment of the Asean Economic Community and cooperation in
social development.
Following the closing of the meeting,
the Princess and other Foreign Ministers signed the Declaration on the
Elimination of Violence against Women in the Asean region.
Under the declaration, the Foreign
Ministers committed their countries to carrying out eight bold
measures to strengthen regional cooperation to eliminate violence
against women.
These include greater regional and
bilateral cooperation in the systematic research, analysis and
dissemination of data on the incidence of violence against women and
effectiveness of policies combating the problem.
The ministers also agreed to
formulate mechanisms focusing on the provision of services to meet the
needs of severe action against offenders and changing social attitudes
and behaviours that occasion violence against women.
The declaration also committed the
Asean countries to eliminating all forms of discrimination against
women, empowering them and promoting their enjoyment of all human
rights.
Meanwhile in the evening, Her Royal
Highness Princess Hajah Masna and her consort Pengiran Anak Haji Abdul
Aziz joined other Foreign Ministers and the Asean Secretary-General at
a dinner.
The reception was hosted by the
Governor of Jakarta, Mr. Sutiyoso, in honour of the Foreign Ministers
and delegates to the 37th AMM.
