Bandar Seri
Begawan - Three local handicraft companies in Brunei Darussalam
recently participated for the first time in the Nusantara Handicraft
Promotion in Handicraft Complex, Kuala Lumpur in a move to introduce
and promote local handicraft products to regional markets.
Some 87 handicraft companies from
Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei Darussalam participated in the event
which was held for the second time.
The event - organised by Malaysian
Handicraft, an agency under the Malaysian Ministry of Culture, Arts
and Heritage - was officially launched by its minister Datuk Seri Dr
Rais Yatim.
Organisers
said the 2003 event was well received where the overall gross income
obtained was about RM427,000 and a total of 12,491 visitors attended
the event.
Figures for this year's event, held f
om June 24 to 28 was not yet available but organisers expect an
increase in the number of gross income and visitors.
Observers said the 14 handicraft
booths from Indonesia, 3 from Brunei and 70 from
Malaysia featured almost similar
handicraft concepts which showed that the people from the three
nations shared the same culture and heritage.
"The differences were the design of
the motives and the display of the national identity of their
respective countries," they said.
They added that participating local
handicraft companies should learn from their Indonesian and Malaysian
counterparts on concepts and quality so they could emulate them in
penetrating the global market. --
