Customs Officials Foil Biggest
Haul Of Illegal Goods
By M K Anwar & Lyna Mohammad
Bandar Seri
Begawan – Big time booze smugglers are on the run again as
Customs and Religious Affairs officials are closing in on them.
Hot on the heels of a recent liquor
bust, BSB and Kuala Belait Customs Enforcement Officers together with
officers from the Board of Issuing Halal Import Permits Section,
Ministry of Religious Affairs, again succeeded, this time in a big
way, in stopping the influx of alcohol and dubious meat into the
country. b
A total of 32 officers from both the
Preventive and Intelligence Section of the Royal Customs and Excise
Department and the Board of Issuing Halal Import Permits Section
initiated an operation called 'Tegas III' in the Sungai Liang area
around 1.30 am Tuesday.
During the operation, they
confiscated a total of 840 tins of Tiger Beer, 312 bottles of White
Wine, 504 kg of chicken wings and 540 kg of meat. This was by far the
biggest haul of illegal goods seized this year.
The goods were reportedly smuggled
from the neighbouring country using a boat and were loaded into two
cars waiting at the beach. Wary enforcement officers, who had been
monitoring the area, stopped one of the cars as it was leaving the
beach.
The officers then noticed another
person who had just finished loading the illegal goods into his car,
but he quickly took to his heels leaving his car behind.
Officers who inspected both cars
found the illegal items in the boot and the back of the vehicles.
A 34-year-old foreigner is currently
being questioned by the authorities in connection with the smuggling
activity.
The Preventive and Intelligence
Section of the Royal Customs and Excise said it welcomes anyone with
information on any illegal smuggling activity to call the Customs
hotline at 2382422 or 8714422. --
