Warning Killer Tides To
Strike Brunei This Month

Bandar Seri
Begawan – Killer tides are here again. High waters of
exceptional height are forecast on certain days of the month.
Mariners and of Kampong Ayer dwellers
and those living along rivers are advised to take exercise extra care
during the high tides and be on the alert for the inevitable flooding
should it rain during the predicted phenomenon.
In the past children have drowned
during high tides as they wondered out and fell into the river.
Particularly Brunei’s populous
Kampong Ayer residents are therefore reminded to keep an eye on their
families and children in particular are to refrain from playing on
walkways or along riverbanks.
According to records by the Marine
Department, the high tides will occur as from today until July 7,
between 7am and 3pm when the tides will reach between 2.2 to 2.6
metres.
The exceptional high tides will also
occur from the July 15-21 between 8am to 2pm when tides will reach
between 2.2 to 2.4 metres.
And from the July 29-31 high tides
will occur from 6am until 12 noon, with water level reaching from 2.2
to 2.5 metres high.
Outboard motor operators including
water taxi operators plying between Bandar Seri Begawan and Bangar are
also advised to proceed with extra caution, especially when passing
between houses in Kampong Ayer.
Boat operators are also advised to be
on the alert for submerged flotsam and to refrain from using the
waterway during heavy downpour that may cause poor visibility.
Ships and barges are to sound their
horn and put on lights at all times when visibility is poor and to
proceed slowly when passing riverine kampongs.
