BRUNEI'S BIG CINEMA BLITZ
By Ignatius Stephen
Bandar
Seri Begawan – Two local cinemas are making history by screening a
top Malaysian Malay movie simultaneously at both end of the state, in
the capital, Bandar Seri Begawan and at Seria oil town down south.
It
is also causing a sensation here because the highly rated love story,
Pasrah (Broken Hearted), by Malaysia’s top film director, Yusof
Haslam is being shown in Brunei tonight ahead of screening in Kuala
Lumpur and other Malaysian cnetres.
The
film starring Malaysia’s No 1 actress, Erra Fazira, is scheduled to
run for three weeks here, the longest season, which will mark another
milestone.
Yet
another first is that never before has a Malay movie been screened
during Hari Raya Season.
“But
we are willing to venture,” said a Hassanal Bolkiah Theatre
official. “We are embarking on an advertising blitz with full page
coverage in the local newspapers,” he added.
The
film is based on a real time drama based on a love story involving
Erra and another actor called Alwi which leaves Erra devastated when
things do not turn out well in the end.
Traditionally
the end of the fasting season which culminates in Hari Raya Id
festivities is a time for families to visit each other and not for
picture going.
The
Hassanal Bolkiah Theatre management is taking a big gamble in
screening the movie during this season, said observes.
But
the theatre management is optimistic and said they are about to prove
their critics wrong.
