AFC to support elected Brunei FA

The Asian Football Confederation or AFC will only recognise a single Brunei Football Association (BFA) in which the office-bearers were elected via the body's Congress, said AFC President Mohamed bin Hammam, according to the AFC's official website.

The situation over the status of BFA is currently being reviewed by AFC. According to information received by AFC, BFA was deregistered in Brunei on November 15 last year and was given a 30-day grace period to appeal against the deregistration to the Ministry of Home Affairs.

However, it was reported to the AFC that during this 30-day grace period, another group registered themselves as the football governing body of Brunei and took over the running of football in the Sultanate.

World governing body FIFA has instructed AFC to review the situation and report back to them.

The report also stated Mohamed bin Hammam as saying: "We have an obligation to support the body that was elected in the Congress and not a body that came into existence by other means."

Mohamed bin Hammam urged parties in Brunei to solve the problem amicably. He also insisted that the BFA statutes must comply with FIFA standards.

A new association named Football Federation of Brunei Darussalam (FFBD) was set up by football fans in the country following the deregistration of Brunei Darussalam Football Association.

The protem committee of the Football Federation of Brunei Darussalam is expected to hold a meeting to elect the administrative council tomorrow at 8pm at the Lecture Theatre of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium.

It was also learned that that FFBD has made applications to become a member of FIFA and AFC on 18th December 2008 after the federation has been registered with the Registrar of Societies Brunei Darussalam.

The new federation has also been recognised by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports.  -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
