MKJB Plans To Be Translated Into Balance Score Card
By Azrol Azmi

Bandar Seri Begawan - In line with the Ministry of Education's (MoE) Strategic Planning 2007-2011 and SPN 21, Maktab Kejuruteraan Jefri Bolkiah (MKJB) or Jefri Bolkiah College of Engineering initiated its own strategic plans to be translated into a Balance Score Card.

This is to improve the college's overall performances and align them with the MoE's three strategic themes - striving towards, ’Teaching and Learning Excellence', `Quality Education' and 'Professional, Accountable and Efficient Organisation'.

Members of the academic and administrative staff recently put their heads together, brainstorming the outlines of Key Performances Indicators (KPIs) and best methods of implementation, so that its staff members can achieve all the KPIs.

The discussion's facilitator was Cikgu Burhan Hj Jais, the Deputy Principal of Education and Training. Among the officers who attended were

MKJB s Principal Cikgu Alias Hj Abu Bakar, as well as the Heads of Departments and its sections. The college saw that that there is a need to improve performances and for the upgrading of staff's skills. A number of actions are also planned through the Professional Development Programme.

For example, having frequent classes and workshop observations would help the teaching experiences amongst both senior and beginner instructors to share and adapt into their own. This is, in itself, a new approach taken into consideration during the discussion and found much approval from all members.

Furthermore, initiatives such as the Staff Mentoring Programme were very helpful for new staff coming into the college.

This would help them familiarise themselves with the daily teaching work as well as administrative tasks, and to enhance their teaching skills.

The college also plans to provide its staff with instructional and leadership training to be used as a key performance indicator. It has already set out a plan to send the newly appointed administrators for a leadership training this February.

It is hoped that with the Balance Score Card's implementation, the college would be able to fulfil the 2009 MoE's mission to "provide holistic education towards achieving its fullest potential for all".   -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
