By Hj Ahmed Shaheeb and Malek Hashim

Bandar Seri Begawan - The 16 survivors of a gas explosion that ripped through a seafood-processing factory in Serasa two days ago that killed three people, have been receiving medical care at the Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Hajah Saleha (RIPAS) Hospital ever since the tragedy struck.

Two of the survivors are currently being treated in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) after having suffered more than 80 per cent burn wounds to their bodies.

Others in less critical condition have been admitted to the surgical intensive care unit whilst those with minor wounds have been recovering in various other wards.

Zaw MM Tin, a Myanmar national, suffered a perforated left eardrum as a result of the massive explosion.

Rais Zulkarnain, from Indonesia, was treated for puncture wounds as a result of pieces of shrapnel

that hit his back during the blast.

Both have since been discharged after receiving medical attention.

According to the nurse on duty, the wards are equipped with a disaster plan, which they adhere to during times of emergencies where they can call upon standby staff to assist with the handling of the patients.

He added that the gas explosion was the worst incident in 2008.

The cause of the explosion is still under investigation.   -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
