Parents Urged To Support School
Exam Programmes By Syazwan
Sadikin
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Families whose children are taking the Peperiksaan
Menengah Bawah (PMB) and `O' Levels need to support school
programmes that prepare the students for their exams, to ensure the
success of such programmes.
This was emphasised by the
Principal of the Menglait Secondary School, Liew Yong Kim, during
the school's fourth annual meet with parents to outline the steps
needed to prepare third and fifth form students for their final
exams.
Among the information given to
parents yesterday were the rules and regulations for the PMB and `O'
Level exams, school fees and requirements for entering sixth form.
The meeting also discussed the
school's Practice Till Perfect (PTP) programme, which has been
running for four years.
The programme entails extra class
sessions for third and fifth form students in the afternoon, where
they practice for their final exams by taking on series of
mock-examinations based on past exam papers.
The results of these `exams' will
enable teachers to address key weaknesses of the students and
improve upon them.
"PTP basically gives more time for
the teacher to help students. By attending the extra classes, we
will have one-on-one contact with the students and give more
attention for the ones that are facing difficulties with certain
subjects," said Dk Nurul Aminatun Fanda, PHMA, a fifth form science
teacher.
Pg Dahlan Pg Hj Hassim, who has a
child at the secondary school, was very grateful for the programme
since the service is provided for free.
He added that this is especially
important for parents earning very low-income, as they cannot afford
to enrol their children in private tuition schools where the fees
are considerably high.
Other parents agreed with Pg
Dahlan's statement. Many also hoped to see more emphasis put on the
English and Maths subjects, and that the programme will encourage
students to develop a keen interest in their studies.
PTP
is only one of the activities by the school to cultivate students'
learning culture and improve their academic performance. The school
has also created a website that allows parents to keep up-to-date
with the latest school activities and achievement.
Menglait
teachers were optimistic that the school has the backing of the
parents, as more than 80 per cent of the parents attended
yesterday's meeting, showing their concern for their children to do
well in school. It was also hoped more parent will attend next
year's meet, so that they can be kept abreast of their children’s
progress. -- Courtesy of
