Growing Demand For Personal Tastes In Furniture Design
By Debbie Too

Brunei-Muara - According to local interior designers, home and furniture trends are based on two age groups, the younger generation, between the age of 25 and 40 years, and the older generation.

While there are more modern and sleek furniture being sold in furniture stores, elaborate and classic furniture are still in demand from the older generation. "It depends on the personality of the customers, but the young ones usually go for modern styles and furniture to suit their homes," said Camille Sanchez, an interior designer from Cityneon Interior and Furnishing Co. She added that her clients usually aim for a modern Asian design. "Some of them requested that their homes be very Balinese, with a lot of wooden furniture," she said.

TH Maju Sdn Bhd, another local interior design company, which is based in Kampung Bunut, also does furniture assembly and design, where their clients submit a design and pick the fabric and material they want. Interior Designer Dong says that the tastes of TH Maju's clients differ based on their personality, but that the younger generation has a modern taste. "The younger generations want their interiors to use a lot of glass and the older generations want something more classical," she added.

"The modern furniture trend started in Brunei a few years ago, and the younger generations choose their furniture more on the basis of style rather than practicality," said Michael Lee, the General Manager of Sengkurong Furniture and Construction Sdn Bhd. A spokesperson from the Growing Star, a furniture store that sells Ikea products, said that the younger generation has always been familiar with Ikea products and that since Growing Star first established six years ago, the easy, do-it-yourself furniture from Ikea still remains popular. He added, "It is just a fact that the younger generation would go for the modern furniture, while the older generation still prefer elaborate and classic furniture."-- Courtesy of The Brunei Times
