By Rosli Abidin Yahya

Bandar Seri Begawan - Literature lovers will pay tribute to the literary works of the late Shawal Rajab on Saturday, Jan 26, at the Language and Literature Bureau in Berakas organised by the Literary Writers Association (Asterawani), with the cooperation of DBP.

Shawal Rajah passed away at the Surgical Intensive Care Unit of the Raja Isteri Pg Anak Saleha Hospital on March 29, 2007 leaving behind literary works which serve as his legacies to Malay literature.

Two experts, Dr Hj Morsidi bin Hi Muhamad, Head of Malay Literature Department, Faculty of Arts and Social Science, Universiti Brunei Darussalam and Prof Madya Dr Hj Arbak Othman, Department of Malay Language, Faculty of Modem Language and Communication, Universiti Putra Malaysia will deliver working papers.

The tribute will be held under the project of Literature Veranda or Pantaran Sastera.

Dr Hj Morsidi will present "The Literary Works of Shawal Rajab: A Brief Discussion on Theme and Writing Style". Prof Madya Dr Hj Arbak, meanwhile, will present a piece entitled "Language in Literature".

Awang Suip bin Hj Wahab, Language Officer of DBP invites all literature lovers including fellow writers, lecturers and students to attend the event which is considered a rare tribute to the writer.

Hj Shawal was found unconscious by his wife on March 23 last year at 2am at the prayer room on top of his four-storey house in Jangsak, Gadong presumably after suffering a stroke resulting from high blood pressure.

An acclaimed literary writer of the Sultanate, the late Hj Shawal won the SEAWrite Award for Brunei Darussalam in Bangkok, Thailand in October 2006.  -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
