Unusual Coconuts Puzzle Couple
By Rosli Abidin Yahya

Bandar Seri Begawan - Senior citizens Hj Ibrahim bin Yusuf, 67, and his wife Hjh Rokiah bte Hj Ahmad, 62, claim that a coconut tree which they planted more than 20 years ago bears coconut fruits from the tree trunk instead of from its flowers, or mayang.

They said that a coconut tree at the age of four of five years will normally produce male and female flowers, followed shortly by fruits.

"However, in the case of this coconut tree, it never produces flowers but straightaway produces fruits that grow out of its tree trunk ever since it started to bear fruit about 15 years ago," said the couple.

The two grew the coconut tree from a fruit which was given to them by a friend twenty years ago.

The couple says that the coconut tree is also unique as it bears fruit all year round.

"The skin of the coconuts is also unusual as it is soft, but its nutmeat is thick and the water is sweet," they said.

"We consider it a strange phenomenon as the way it bears fruit is definitely different from all the other coconut trees we have." -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
