Beware Of Strangers Police Warn Public

Bandar Seri Begawan - There has been a brief spurt in the number of rape cases in the country.

The Royal Brunei Police Force has reminded members of the public to be extra cautious and avoid becoming a victim of rape. The police are concerned as four rape cases have been reported, including the latest incident this week, since the last week of December. Two other separate cases of "outraging modesty" were also reported since the last week of December 2007.

Although no details were provided, the police, however, shared a few crime prevention tips.

The public has been advised not to fall for any invite or an offer of free rides from strangers.

They have been told to educate their children not to accept gifts or food from strangers, especially when they are away from home. The public has also been

advised to avoid walking alone in isolated places.

The sentence for rape is 30 years’ imprisonment and 12 strokes of the cane.

Separately, the police have sought help from members of the public with regards to a missing white saloon car bearing registration number BY4618. Anyone who has information on the whereabouts of the car can contact the nearest police station or the hotline 993.

Elsewhere, there were three reported cases of car break-in and theft of three blue cards, four CDs and important documents.

Seven cases of theft were also reported at separate locations, and among the items washing machine, $300 cash, four batteries from a heavy machine, two compressors and 60 pieces of galvanized iron.

In relation to one of the cases, the police have detained four men in their 20s and 30s.

Seven cases of theft inside buildings were also recorded and items reported missing include 11 electric cables, a digital camera, an air conditioner unit, cash, a mobile phone, a TV unit, a radio, a drilling machine, an emergency lamp and important documents.

In relation to one of the cases, a man in his 40s and woman in her 20s are suspected to be involved.

The police have also recorded a few immigration, customs and cases involving Labour and corruption.

Over the last four days, 19 accidents have been recorded – nine in Brunei Muara District, eight in Belait and two in Tutong.
