Begawan - The Minister of Industry and Primary Resources
yesterday inspected the Fisheries Department facilities to monitor
the progress in a project that raises tiger prawns and groupers.
Dato
Paduka Hj Mohd Hamdillah Hj Abd Wahab was accompanied by the Deputy
Minister, Dato Paduka Hj Mohd Hamid Hj Mohd Jaafar, the Permanent
Secretary, Pg Hjh Mariana PDNSD PgHj Abd Momin and the Deputy
Permanent Secretary.
The first facility visited was the
Broodstock Development Centre at Serasa. Hjh Hasnah Ibrahim, the
director of Fisheries, Dr George Chamberlain, technical director of
the Integrated Aquaculture International (IAI) from the United
States, as well as other senior officers from the fisheries
department and IAI team members welcomed the delegation and took the
minister around the facility.
With the project, Brunei's shrimp
aquaculture industry has shown a tremendous progress with the
assistance from the experts from IAI.
The project has also helped Seiwa
Corporation Sdn Bhd in increasing its rostris shrimp fries
production. At present, it produces about 10 to 16 million fries a
month, enough for the industry's requirement and also for export.
The prawn facility was built to
produce tiger prawn brood-stock that are healthy and free from
diseases. The project has been running since February last year.
The visitors were briefed by the
Acting Senior Fisheries Officer, Hjh Rosinah Hj Yussof as the Head
of Research and Management Division of the Fisheries Department.
The briefing included progress on
the production of tiger prawn families, the construction and
upgrading of quarantine facilities for shrimps, establishment of the
Aquatic Animal Health Centre, and the construction of nutrition
