Briefing On ASAP Disease
Prevention
By Sonia K.
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Professor Sajid Maqbool from the Children's
Hospital in Lahore, Pakistan gave a member's perspective on Asian
Strategic Alliance for Pneumococcal (ASAP) disease prevention during
its launch in December last year in South Korea.
Professor Lulu Bravo, ASAP Chair,
gave an overview on pneumococcal disease.
It is not a notifiable disease, it
has no standard surveillance system, the pneumococcal conjugate
vaccine is not included in the National Immunisation Programmes of
many countries despite the WHO's recommendation, she said
ASAP's
objectives are to collate and disseminate available data on disease
epidemiology within the region, create awareness about pneumococcal
disease and its prevention among professionals and the public,
encourage and support surveillance of pneumococcal disease, generate
consensus based on evidence-based medicine and best clinical
practices as well as communicate and engage with policy makers
regarding the importance of pneumococcal disease and its prevention.
ASAP strategies are to work in
conjunction with the PACE and ASPID umbrella organisations, collate
region-wide information on pneumococcal disease and engage with
policy makers.
ASAP serves as a regional panel of
experts to develop education material for healthcare professionals,
promote awareness and disseminate information among the public. -- Courtesy of Borneo
