Alarming Trend Of School
Dropouts

Begawan - There is a significant increase in the number of
school dropouts in Form 5 and Form 6 registering as jobseekers
indicating difficulty in obtaining higher education or a mindset for
a career before completing school.

In the latest labour statistics on
the number of registered jobseekers, a significant increase in
the number of those with Form 6 qualifications registering are
seen whereas up to November 2007 there had been 123, a number
more than double of 2006 where it was only 53.
Those who registered as job
seekers with Form 5 qualifications are seen in November 2007 in
a staggering number of 2462 while it was 2223 in 2006.
These numbers could be an
indication of a possible young workforce for the nation.
Those with a degree
qualification registering as jobseekers with the labour
department also have seen an increase in 2007 whereas up to
November there had been 40 compared to 2006 where there |

were 12.
However on a positive note the
numbers of registered jobseekers with qualification of less than
Form 5 have significantly dropped. Up to November 2007 there
were 178 registered jobseekers with no schooling qualification
compared to 2006 (up to November) there were 234.
There were 758 jobseekers with
qualifications, up to November 2007 compared to 2006 when there
were 234. Those with qualifications upto Secondary 3 were 1775
upto November 2007. This indicates a drop compared to 2006 when
there were 2236. |
Those with qualifications of up to
form 4 registering also dropped significantly close to half the
number where in 2006 it was 837 and up to November 2007 it was 457.
Thus the total number of registered
job seekers with qualifications with no schooling qualification up
to form 6 dropped where up to November 2007 it was 5753 compared to
2006 when it was 6379.
Those with qualifications from
technical, vocational and university level the numbers as registered
jobseekers have slightly increased from November 2007 and are now
324 compared to 321 in 2006. Most of them comprise females, where
there were 185 females and males were 139.
The 40 registered jobseekers with
degree qualifications up to November 2007, had 31 females and 9
males compared to 2006 where there were 12 females and 4 males.
Those with certified qualification
were 144 up to November 2007, 77 females and 67 males compared to
2006 it was 169, 86 males and 83 females.
Those with ordinary national
certificate up to November 2007 was 49 compared to 2006 was 53.
Ordinary national diploma up to November 2007 was 41 similar to the
number in 2006. Those with diploma was 29 compared to 2006 was 40
and those with higher national diploma was 21 compared to 2006 was
6.
Clerical and related works remain
as the top preference for jobseekers with a number of 2198 up to
November 2007 while 2nd top choice was in the services sector with a
number of 1417, third is general labour with a number of 933. -- Courtesy
