Mobile Phones To Surpass Population

Bandar Seri Begawan - The mobile phone users in Brunei are almost equal to the country's population. And at the rate it's raising, it could soon surpass the population figures.

DST Com said there are more than 250,000 DST subscribers for postpaid (Prima) and prepaid (Easi) now while B Mobile which has been in operation for one and a half year declined to comment on their number of subscribers.

However it is common for Bruneians nowadays to keep two mobile phones from the two service providers. DST Corporate Communication Unit said that there were 150,000 subscribers about five years ago.

Brunei's population as of June last year stood at 383,000, statistics department of JPKE said. However the service provider declined to comment on the number of text messages sent out a day.

They only said that there has been an increase in traffic flows on the usage of SMS service with two per cent increase during the festive seasons such as Hari Raya. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
