Bandar Seri
Begawan - "Mission accomplished" for some 25 crew members of
the US Navy ship USS Rentz.
Despite the hot, wet day, the US
sailors volunteered for the cleaning campaign at Pusat Ehsan,
Bengkurong yesterday at afternoon.
USS Rentz, an Oliver Hazard Perry
Class, arrived at the Muara Commercial Port yesterday for a
scheduled port visit.
The American sailors are taking the
opportunity to meet local citizens, experience local customs and
traditions, sightsee, shop and enjoy the many recreational
activities offered in the country.
Yesterday afternoon, some 25 crew
members participated in a clean-up at Pusat Ehsan in Bengkurong to
demonstrate their commitment to supporting the local special needs
community.
Pusat
Ehsan has received assistance before, including cleaning campaigns,
but was happy to receive volunteer workers from the US Navy crew.
USS Rentz is commanded by Commander Mark S Johnson and its home port
is in San Diego; California.
USS Rentz is the only US combatant
vessel to be named after a priest. The Rentz was named after World
War II Navy Chaplain George S Rentz (1882-1942) who was posthumously
awarded the Navy Cross for selfless bravery following the loss of
USS Houston (CA-30) in the Battle of Sunda Strait. He was the only
US Navy chaplain to be so honoured during World War II. Interesting
events in Rentz's history include the rescue of a downed helicopter
crew in the Persian Gulf (August 16, 1997), interception of cocaine
smugglers off the Southern California coast (April 1, 2002), and the
rescue of 90 Ecuadorians on a disabled vessel (June 18, 2005).
