Flexibility Key To Success
By Shareen Han
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Belief in one's self and having the right attitude
are vital to a more rewarding and satisfying lifestyle, an expert on
life coaching from the United Kingdom said in a talk yesterday.
Alison Zarecky, who gave a talk on
"Transform Your Life With Life Coaching" at the Orchid Garden Hotel,
told about 50 participants that life coaching is all about
challenging one's beliefs and opening up new opportunities and
options to improve one's life.
"Things that you think are
impossible can be possible; if you believe in yourself;" Zarecky, an
English expatriate in Brunei, said in an interview with The Brunei
Times. "Reality is different for each person, it is shaped according
to how people process information and their experiences, so events
can mean different things to different people," she said at the talk
organised by the British Community Link CoffeePlus. She added that
people can broaden their reality by looking at different
perspectives, thereby achieving more flexibility in their lives.
She explained that life coaching
enables people to change through learning and being able to do,
achieve and contribute more for their wellbeing.
"It considers your life as a whole
- from family to work to finances." Zarecky, who has had more than
15 years experience in the business and marketing fields, said life
coaching is not therapeutic or instructional in content.
Some of the benefits of life
coaching include making clearer judgements about situations,
learning more from experiences and making better choices, said
Zarecky, who has been residing in Brunei for a year.
"I have had clients who wanted to
remove unwanted things from their life, such as smoking, (and
needed) help in identifying a satisfying purpose in life," she said.
She said a life coach assists in developing one's sense of power and
self-reliance to tackle his life and find ways to improve it.
"(A life coach) encourages you to
rise to challenges, overcome interference and move into action," she
said. Zarecky said some of the common types of interferences or
obstacles that can impede one's quality of life include not having a
clear vision or goal, being trapped by material desires and waiting
for a miracle to happen.
She said one can break down those
barriers by exploring reasons, using listening and questioning
skills, trying out different approaches and options, and creating an
action plan to move towards the desired outcome.
Zarecky
said she became interested in life coaching after reading an
inspiring article about the concept, which then led to her taking a
Diploma of Life Coaching course at Newcastle College in the UK.
