Brunei, Malaysia Urged To See Thailand's Post-Tsunami Recovery
By Rosh Abidi Yahya in Bangkok

Bangkok Thailand - Travel traders and media representatives from Brunei and Malaysia will be taken to Southern Thailand this Jan 30 to see the recovery efforts being done at places affected by the Dec. 26 tsunami disaster.

Mr Somboon of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) for Malaysia and Brunei told the Borneo Bulletin in Bangkok that most seaside resorts such as the famous Phuket, Phangha and Krabi have nearly recovered and business has gradually returned back to normal.

He said tourists are streaming back into the destinations in Southern Thailand and the industry is regaining stability after the tsunami tragedy that killed 5,300 people, including foreign tourists in Thailand.

Tourists are streaming back into the country and the tourism industry in the south is regaining stability.

"Right now, the main thing we need to do is rebuild confidence and to do that, we need to show the travel agents and media representatives in Malaysia and Brunei with their own eyes the recovery of the tsunami-affected places," he said.

He said only travel agencies, which are active in taking tourists to Southern Thailand will be invited. A Borneo Bulletin representative will be invited too, he said.

He added that a recovery fund has been set up by the Bangkok-based Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) to help the tourism industry rebound from the tsunami tragedy.

"The fund is meant to assist the eight affected PATA members, including Thailand, to rebuild after the disaster," he said.
