Brunei’s Tsunami Relief Team Gets A Boost

Bandar Seri Begawan – Brunei’s role in the relief operation in Aceh will be given further impetus with the expected arrival shortly of a group of health volunteers at the earthquake and tsunami-hit province.

Already a large Brunei humanitarian relief team is on its way there.

Meanwhile, the Relief Fund for the Tsunami Victims, open for six months from January 3, continues to receive donations in various forms, as do other channels of contributions.

And with an RBAF transport aircraft to ply between Bandar Seri Begawan and Aceh to ferry the donated materials, volunteers have been kept busy packing and getting them ready to be transported.

Bruneis’ Medical Clinic in Aceh will begin operation today.

The country's medical team, who joined the advanced delegation to Aceh, has made preparations to receive aid from the country and identified places to set up clinics to treat tsunami victims in the province.

When contacted by the Radio Television Brunei (RTB) News Centre yesterday, Dr Haji Affendy, the Director General of Medical Services of the Ministry of Health, told RTB that the Brunei medical clinic is located in a southern area of Banda Aceh itself.

Dr Haji Affendy explained that the Brunei paramedic team was scheduled to arrive in the area yesterday.

As a result of the team's early visit, Dr Haji Affendy outlined the strategy of the medical team.

He said more than 200,000 people are scattered in tents who need basic facilities.

As such, Brunei's paramedics will give priority to setting up a centre for providing medical treatment especially to those who suffer trauma, wounds, artery infection, and skin disease.

Dr Haji Affendy said, so far the spread of infectious diseases such as diarrhea is still under control. -- Courtesy of Radio Television Brunei
