Md Arbe Fastest Cyclist In Trifle Star Road Race

Bandar Seri Begawan - The Triple Star Open Road Race finally came to an end yesterday when the 35 participants completed the third and last stage of the race at the Taman Sir Omar Ali Saifuddien in the capital.

Md Arbe Shadatul Fan•ani Zainul Ariffin proved to be the fastest cyclist in the 136km-long race, finishing the course at 3 hours 30 minutes and 13 seconds.

However, fop individual honours in the Open Road Race went to Md Rafiuddin Zakaria and Muhammad Raihan Abd Aziz, who managed a podium finish in all the three stages.

Rafiuddin won the 90km first stage - held along routes in the capital - in a time of 1.23:55.

He was followed by Raihan, four seconds behind, and Arbe in third place, with a time of 1.24:01.

Rafiuddin finished third in the 142km-long second stage from Belait to Tutong, which was won by Md Azbe Hidayatullah Zainul Ariffin in 3.43:52. Raihan was second in 3.45:27, while Rafiuddin finished 15 seconds behind him.

Rafiuddin was second in the third stage - which began in Tutong town - behind Arbe in 3.33:55, after holding off a strong challenge from Raihan at the finish line.

Top ten winners in the different stages received cash prizes presented by the president of the Brunei Darussalam Cycling Federation, Hj Rosli Hj Mohidin. Champions received $150, the runners-up won $120 and third-place finishers cycled away with $100.

Hj Rosli was very delighted with the success of the Open Road Race and impressed with the performance of the participating cyclists, especially on their overall fitness.

The cyclists showed remarkable improvement as the Race progressed, he said, going from an average speed of 37km/hr in the first stage to 40km/hr in the following stages.

Cyclists short-listed to represent the country in the upcoming 'Le Tour de Brunei' this March, will undergo training at the game village of the Department of Youth and Sports, he disclosed. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
