Temporary Ban On Fish Imports
By M K Arwvar
Bandar Seri
Begawan - The Department of Fisheries announced on Friday a
temporary ban on the importation of small and planktivorous fish such
as sardines, mackerels, shads, anchovies, trevallies, scads,
Kirang-Kirang, Dayang-Dayang, Parangiyang, Minyak-Minyak and Molluscan
Shellfish from Sabah and its neighbouring areas including Labuan,
Sundar, Lawas, Awat-Awat and Limbang until further notice.
The ban is due to the recent outbreak
of the red tide phenomena in some of the areas in Sabah waters.
In Brunei meanwhile, the monitoring
has indicated that the red tide phenomenon is decreasing below
critical level.
There is however a possibility of it
increasing again, the fisheries experts predicted.
The Department of Fisheries
reiterated that it is safe to consume large and also small sized fish
provided that the gills, guts and other internal organs are completely
removed and thoroughly cleaned before cooking.
However the public is advised to
refrain from eating small fish of which the gills, stomach and
internal organs cannot be fully removed. This includes molluscan
shellfish from affected areas or from unknown origin.
Monitoring will still be continued by
the Fisheries Department and the public will be informed from time to
time of the current situation.
The public especially fishermen can
assist the department by reporting any water discoloration and report
any mass fish mortalities in Brunei waters or beaches at the following
telephone numbers: 8819218,8769730, 8786399 and 8887480. --
