HSBC Sets Up National Disaster Relief Fund

Bandar Seri Begawan - HSBC has set up a special account to receive donations from members of the public for the Brunei Darussalam National Disaster Relief Fund.

Interested parties who wish to donate to the National Disaster Relief Fund can do so at the counters of any HSBC branch.

For HSBC customers, donations can also be made through HSBC's Personal Internet Banking service or Personal Telephone Banking Centre at 2228666.

According to Mr Simon Williams, Acting Chief Executive Officer Brunei, HSBC wants to support the Government of Brunei through the National Committee of Brunei Darussalam National Disaster Relief Fund in collecting donations from the public.

Mr Williams added that HSBC is offering the use of the Bank's banking infrastructure, including its branch network, non-branch channels such as Personal Internet Banking and Personal banking Centre to support the National Disaster Committee.

"I am pleased that the proceeds will be delivered immediately to the affected countries to help relief works currently organised by the respective governments in conjunction with other international bodies such as UNICEF and International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies," Mr William added.

Apart from donating money, which will be matched dollar-for-dollar by the bank, HSBC staff are also collecting clothing and blankets from staff and family members in support of the Brunei Scouts Association's Relief efforts.

HSBC Asia Pacific has responded last week to the Sumatra earthquake and tsunami tragedy by immediately donating an initial amount of US$1 million to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.

HSBC Group Chairman Sir John Bond further announced on Wednesday that HSBC Group would match donations worldwide up to US$1 million in response to the tragedy.
