Red Tide Down Below Critical level
By Helena M Mahathir

Bandar Seri Begawan – The red tide phenomenon affecting Brunei waters is decreasing to the level below critical, said the Department of Fisheries, Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources yesterday.

However, the possibility of the level increasing is still there, it added.

The Department of Fisheries reiterates that it is safe to consume large and also small sized fish provided the gills, guts and other internal organs are completely removed and the fish is thoroughly cleaned before cooking.

However, the public is advised to abstain from eating small fishes of which their gills, stomach and internal organs cannot be removed, and also molluscan shellfish from the affected areas or of unknown origin.

The Department of Fisheries will keep the public informed of the current situation from time to time.

The public, especially fishermen, can assist the department by reporting any water discolouration and any mass fish mortalities in Brunei waters or beaches at the following numbers - 8810218, 8769730, 8786399 and 8887480. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
