Small States Hailed For Quick
Adaptability To Change
Bandar Seri
Begawan – 'Small states' have experienced drawbacks associated
with domestic market, geographical areas as well as political and
economic influence.
Dato
Haji Abdul Wahab bin Juned, the Permanent Secretary at the Prime
Ministers Office, made these remarks at the closing ceremony of the
International Conference on Contemporary Issues in Economic
Development of Small States yesterday.
Despite these drawbacks, he said,
small states have been proven to be more strategic in their ability to
adapt quickly to change in conditions and adopt new requirements.
The Permanent Secretary also said
that small states with high 'state capacity' appear to manage risks
and opportunities in ways that yield higher rates of growth and
achieve higher levels of global integration.
Dato
Paduka Haji Abdul Wahab presented certificates to guest speakers and
participants of the two-day conference, which was organised by
University Brunei Darussalam.
A total of 16 papers were presented
by local and foreign speakers, concerning current trends, challenges,
opportunities for economic development of small states in general and
of Brunei Darussalam in particular.
