Bandar Seri Begawan - A Bangladeshi who remained in this country unlawfully for 873 days was sentenced to eight months' imprisonment and three strokes of whipping by the Bandar Magistrate's Court yesterday.

Razaul Karim Abul Kashem, 29, was arrested by the Immigration Enforcement Officers at a house in Simpang 93, Kampong Jerudong two days ago for failure to produce his passport to the officers.

The Immigration Prosecutor said the defendant was previously sentenced to six months' imprisonment for overstaying in this country after the expiry of his immigration pass. He was released from prison on July 13, 2002.

Yesterday, the defendant was charged with staying unlawfully in this country after the expiry of his permitted to leave pass on August 15, 2002.

The prosecutor said that the defendant's passport was endorsed with a permitted to leave pass on August 1, 2002 and valid for two weeks, for him to leave the country for Bangladesh. However, he failed to do so. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
