Minister Urges Teachers, Students
To Help Tsunami Victims
Bandar Seri
Begawan – Pehin Dato Haji Awang Abdul Aziz, the Minister of
Education, has urged headmasters and principals to extend whatever aid
is possible.
Anything from medicine and water to
school books and stationery can be utilised to help the survivors of
the disaster, especially the children.
Pehin
said that at the moment headmasters and principals are discussing what
form of aid Bruneians could give.
Most appropriately, Bruneians can
provide what are most needed for the long-term benefit, particularly
medicines, clean water, clothing and school stationery.
This is important since we are
assisting both the present and future generations, more importantly
the children who must continue their schooling.
This, of course, is subject to the
policy and decision of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports.
The Minister of Education also held a
discussion with the UBD Vice-Chancellor to decide whether the
university students too can give assistance.
The discussion was to ascertain if
the UBD had any contact with the Aceh University and if so, Bruneians
could channel their relief aid directly.
Pehin
said he did not rule out the possibility of Bruneian volunteers
themselves delivering the aid to Aceh and Phuket where at least
170,000 Muslim residents were among the tsunami victims stranded.
Individuals, associations and
organisations in the country, who wish to organise any charity
activities by contributing 100 per cent from the proceed for the
victims of the Tsunami disaster Fund, should forward their application
to the Committee Members of the Fund.
Meanwhile, those who want to conduct
activities by contributing some of the proceeds from the charity
should forward it directly to the Ministry of Home Affairs as usual.
Awang
Husaini bin Abdullah, the Assistant Director of Community Development,
said that there are individuals collecting the donations without
permission from the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports.
In an interview with RTB yesterday
morning, Awang Husaini said the Fund Committee will set up collection
boxes for the fund at all Mosques, Suraus, Shopping Complexes,
Airport, Petrol Stations and District Offices throughout the country.
This is to make it easier for the
public to make their cash donations for the fund.
The formation of the committee is to
give the rakyat and residents in the country an opportunity to
contribute in anyway they can to help the survivors of the earthquake
and tsunami disaster.
