Brunei’s Unemployed Could Bring
Future Problems Says Minister
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Based on the latest statistics, there is less than
80,000 domestic workforce in Brunei, at the very same time, there are
8,000 people who are within the working age group who are jobless,
reports Radio Television Brunei (RTB).
Unemployment rate which is higher
than 6% sets the alarm in those countries where the foreign labour
forces are not required. Higher unemployment means lower domestic
growth.
In Brunei however, a large number of
foreign workers, better living conditions in the country and a caring
government's excellent social welfare system have not set off the
alarm, the report says.
Yet unemployment is a “resting virus”
in any society, it is the root of many domestic problems and a very
negative trend, the news item warns.
To solve the problem of unemployment,
enormous effort from various sectors are much needed, it adds. The
report quotes Pehin Dato Awang Haji Suyoi Bin Haji Osman, the Deputy
Minister of Education as saying how his ministry is not only educating
the people, but also helping the nation to solve its one of the
critical matter, unemployment.
He says the ministry is therefore
doing far beyond just educating the youngsters.
Unemployment is not just a problem of
those who are unemployed it also burdens the government.
In the end, employed population of
the country has to shoulder the unemployed population in order to keep
social balance or else its effects on the social system and economy
could seriously affect the future generation. --
