Foreign Workers Rounded Up At Muara Bus Station
By Helena M. Mahathir

Bandar Seri Begawan - Sixty foreign workers were brought to the Muara Police Station for further investigations as they failed to show valid travel documents following a police inspection and roadblock operation conducted by the Muara Police District yesterday morning.

The 2-hour operation, carried out mostly at the bus station in Muara Town, involved 18 police personnel and was led by the Assistant OCPD of Muara Police District.

The operation was held to ensure that foreign workers had in their possession valid travel documents.

One of the foreign workers who tried in vain to escape inspections was later found to have expired travel documents dating back to May 12, 2003. He was also found to have runaway from his employer.

All those who were brought to the police station for further enquiries were told to contact their respective employers to bring their travel documents before they could be released.

Only one foreign worker was detained for having expired travel documents and running away from his employer, while the rest were released after their respective employers came to the station with their relevant documents.

According to the Assistant OCPD of Muara Police District, among the objectives of the operation was to prevent crime as well as to remind foreign workers to always bring with them valid travel documents as required by the law. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
