Winnipeg cops follow trail of pine needles to nab Christmas tree thief

Winnipeg - A trail of evergreen needles was all police needed to solve the case of a pine tree purloined from the front yard of a Winnipeg home.

Two days before Christmas, the homeowner complained to police that someone had cut down and taken a pine tree from his yard. Officers went to the home Tuesday and were able to track a trail of needles to another house in the neighbourhood.

A 22-year-old man there told them he had bought the tree from an unknown door-to-door tree salesman.

But police found the missing tree in his living room and charged the man with theft.-- Canadian Press
