Landslides And Flood Hit Brunei
Residents
Bandar Seri
Begawan – As many as eight emergency calls prompted the
Jerudong Fire Services Department to act swiftly yesterday and assist
families affected by landslides and flooded homes in the area.
Police sources said that of the
eight, two calls were to render services to those affected by
landslides and six of which were to help families in flooded homes.
Earlier Saturday afternoon, some
areas in Kampung Pengkalan Batu, in particular, Batu Ampar, were
flooded which also triggered landslides.
According to Jamain bin Haji Simba,
an officer from the DSO the Fire Station advised the residents of the
most damaged home to find other accommodation in the meantime for
their own safety.
One of the houses that was damaged
most belonged to Dayang Faedah Nur Huda binti Haji Matzain.
She recounted her first-hand
experience which occurred at quarter to 4pm yesterday.
She said it rained very heavily and
then in less than a minute, the landslide occurred, crashing into the
back of her house and caving in several rooms.
One of the rooms that caved in was
occupied by three-year old Dayang Nasuha, who, at the time, was asleep
and buried under all the dirt and rubble.
The men and the maids saved her by
pulling her out and she was sent to hospital.
After that, all the children were
immediately sent to a neighbour’s house for their safety.
Dayang
Nasuha binti Supindi was thankful that she suffered only minor
injuries. She is now recovering at home after being cleared by the
doctors in the hospital.
With the extensive damages brought by
this incident, it would be difficult to put a preliminary assessment
of the losses incurred so far.
However, for the families affected,
their New Year had unfortunately gotten off to a very bad start even
before it begun. --
