Police Raid Kiulap As Petty Crimes
Go Up In The Area
By M K Anwar
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Crime rate in the Kiulap commercial area saw an
increase last year.
Police again disclosed this to the
Bulletin during a raid on several parts of the Kiulap Commercial area.
The fast pace of growth in the Kiulap
commercial area is seen as a major factor that is prompting some
unwanted elements to operate there.
There have been reports of several
crime committed in the area that have already resulted in several
arrests.
These include burglary and theft
crimes on offices and business premises located in the area. Money and
office equipment have been stolen in the area.
The raid on the eve of the New Year
was jointly held by the BSB Police and the Immigration Enforcement
Section.
It must be highlighted that though
the police are responsible for the security and safety of the area,
cooperation and involvement of building and business owners must
receive top priority in a joint effort to rid of any criminal
elements.
"There is a need for a two-prong
attack on these criminal elements, not only the police but also from
those in the commercial areas," observers noted.
The police are doing all they can in
patrolling the Kiulap commercial areas but then some of the buildings
there are providing small `gaps' and `chances' for criminals to
operate.
This can be seen in the lack of
security guards to look after buildings after all the shops have
closed.
Some business premises are also not
properly secured in terms of installing iron grilles on their doors or
windows.
The areas of the buildings must also
be provided improved lightings on its roads and pathways.
Other commercial areas for example in
Gadong have employed their own security guards that look after
building security around the clock.
Building and business owners are
urged to lend a hand in combating crime and not leave security
concerns solely to the enforcement agencies.
It is imperative that they assist,
after all a commercial area free from crime can attract more tenants
and customers.
Though the raid did not yield any
offender or criminals, it highlights the continuing effort by the BSB
Police and other enforcement agencies to rid the area of criminal
pests.
