International Conference To Highlight Economic Development

Bandar Seri Begawan – Local and international speakers will be delivering their keynote address and presentations of papers at the upcoming international conference at Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD).

The conference, which UBD is hosting through its Faculty of Business, Economics and Policy Studies, will be held from January 5 to 6 at the Chancellor's Hall.

The international conference, a major part of UBD's events will focus on "Contemporary Issues in Economic Development of Small States".

Pehin Dato Dr. Awang Haji Ahmad bin Hall Jumat, the Minister of Development, will grace the opening ceremony as the guest of honour.

Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Dewa Major General (R) Dato Seri Pahlawan Awang Haji Mohammad bin Haji Daud, the chairman of Brunei Economic Development Board (BEDB), is expected to deliver a keynote address.

UBD will play a major role in the plenary sessions where presentation of papers will follow suit, as they will discuss on various issues concerning the overall theme.

Among the topics to be presented at the conference are "Impact of Research and Experimental Development in Science and Technology on Small Developing States" by Dr. Tan Kha Sheng and Dr. A.O. Olofinjana; "Some Implications of Credit-Driven Spending on the Local Economy: Brunei Case Study" by Dr. Teo Siew Yean and Gabriel Yong Yit Vui; "Socio Economic Impact of Privatisation in Brunei Darussalam: Ethical Issues and Implications" by Michael Chong Vui Hiung; "Economic Development, Human Development and Ecological Sustainability: Brunei and other Small Economies in an International Context" by Dr. Ram Pillarisetti, Dr. Shamim Siddiqui and Dr. Roger Lawrey; and, "Privatisation: Good or Bad?" by Dr. Hjh Sainah Saim.

Speakers from Malaysian universities, Szent Istvan University, and HSBC Singapore as well as an independent scholar will also take the floor to present their papers on interesting topics within the theme's context.

The objective of the conference is to serve as a forum for interested parties to consider and discuss the current trends, challenges and opportunities for economic development of small states.

This conference will be of interest to academicians, policy makers, practitioners and members of the public with an interest in the future prospects for small state development in general and that of Brunei Darussalam in particular.

Students especially those at the pre-university and higher educational institutions are also welcomed to attend the conference.

Registration fee for interested participants is $150 per person and $80 for students.

Meanwhile, for groups of five (minimum), each participant would have to pay $135.
