Malaysian-Based Malay Dailies
Getting Expensive
By Rosli Abidin Yahya
Bandar Seri
Begawan – Certain Malaysian newspapers will see a dramatic
price increase in Brunei today, Jan 1.
Distributors here said the price
increase is unavoidable because of rising production costs.
Berita
Harian, Berita Minggu, Harian Metro, Metro Ahad, Utusan Malaysia and
Utusan Minggu will be up by 70 cents each to $2, an increase of 53 per
cent.
The Malay language newspapers used to
be priced at $1.30 each.
However, the English-language New
Straits Times and New Sunday Times remain at its original price of
$1.70 each. The two papers had been subjected to price increases
earlier on.
The dramatic increase in price of the
Malay-language Malaysian newspapers had caused the papers to cost more
than the Singaporean Straits Times and The Sunday Times, which are
sold at $1.95 each.
However, the English-language
Malaysian newspapers are still cheaper by 25 cents. --
