Sultan's New Year Titah Focuses On
National Issues
By Maya Salleh
Bandar Seri
Begawan – His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei
last night once again expressed his deepest sympathy and
condolence on behalf of the citizens and residents of Brunei to the
countries affected by the tsunami catastrophe.
The monarch conveyed this when he
delivered a Titah to mark the New Year 2005.
Initially, he expressed gratefulness
to Allah the Almighty for the peace and harmony that allowed Brunei to
enter the New Year 2005.
Reflecting on the tsunami disaster
that claimed thousands of lives in neighbouring countries, notably
Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand as well as other affected friendly
countries, the Sultan expressed his deepest sympathy and condolence.
His Majesty also noted that the peace
and harmony we have enjoyed could be attributed to Government's
efforts in effectively managing the country's security.
However, peace alone is not enough
without the developments enjoyed by the ‘rakyat', he added.
His Majesty emphasised that peace and
development should be generated together.
The monarch also referred to the
importance of the development process in the private sector in this
country.
He said the country would not
progress swiftly and idyllically without a private sector that is
solid and dynamic.
His Majesty expressed hope that each
Government agency would support the private sector as well as give it
priority especially in the establishment and implementation of Small
and Medium Enterprises owned by the people of Brunei.
"This must be executed with high
national spirit, that is transparent and reasonable. Any acts that can
hinder the development of entrepreneurs such as violation of laws
notably abuse of power, corruption and the like, must be avoided.
Everyone should cooperate with the Government to ensure that such ills
do not exist and should they exist, must be immediately overcome," he
added.
His Majesty also reflected on the
country's international relations where last year saw the monarch on
state visits to many countries within and outside the region.
The purpose of the state visits, the
Sultan said, was not only to strengthen bilateral relations but also
for us to enhance joint efforts with other countries with whom we
enjoy cordial ties. This will enable Brunei to potentially gain mutual
benefits.
The Sultan said, multilateral talks
and negotiations could be continued through the country's membership
in ASEAN, APEC, ASEM and other international organisations where our
participation in such organisations is seen vital, and established as
benchmarks.
Our country is not left behind from
the world's current developments in terms of politics, economy and
security, he pointed out.
His Majesty expressed hope that the
dawn of the New Year 2005 will become more stable and advanced, and he
stressed that patriotic slogans should not stay as mere slogans but
must be realised through our actions.
In this respect, the monarch called
on the people to possess strong and mature qualities in order to rise
as successful individuals.
The monarch extended his appreciation
to all citizens and residents of the country who have given full
support and cooperation of His Majesty's Government during the past.
His Majesty extended this to all
levels of the public sector, security personnel as well as those
working in the private sector, for their sincere efforts in carrying
out their duties and responsibilities.
On behalf of the Royal family, His
Majesty wished all levels of the 'rakyat' and residents a happy New
Year 2005.
His Majesty also prayed to Allah that the 'rakyat' and the
country would always be protected and blessed with peace and harmony.
