Roadblock Set Up To Catch Booze
Smugglers On New Year’s Eve
Bandar Seri
Begawan – Year 2004 drew to its end yesterday but it did not
deter the Royal Brunei Police Force from carrying out its mandate of
ensuring peace and protecting the public from any dangers by
apprehending law breakers.
A roadblock was set up last night at
9pm specifically to present a physical reminder to visitors coming
into the country as well as to local residents that any infractions of
justice would be immediately meted out.
Police officers from the Limau Manis
Police station conducted the roadblock operation.
On Thursday evening, His Majesty the
Sultan of Brunei commanded that all forms of entertainment to
celebrate the New Year were cancelled.
Towards this end, the roadblock set
up last night for the Police to stop and search every vehicle,
entering the country, to ensure that smuggling of alcohol in
particular into the country would be detected.
Officers from the Syariah Enforcement
Unit were also on hand last night to take over should any local
Muslims be caught trying to bring alcohol into the country.
Most of the traffic flow into Brunei
consisted of holiday makers returning home just before the school term
started.
Some of the motorists said that they
had waited in a four-hour traffic queue just to enter into the
country.
Although no arrests were made last
night, it did show that the laws and regulations of the Sultanate were
respected and adhered to, thanks largely to the tireless and
continuous vigil of the country's law 'enforcement agencies.
