Warning over fake monks
By Liza Mohd
The Chinese community in the Belait
District are expressing concern over the presence of fake "monks", who
unexpectedly turn up at their residences during the Chinese New Year
festivities and demand for cash.
According to a Chinese lady, the two
men have a deep Mandarin accent and are originally from Mainland
China.
The unwelcome visitors with shaved
heads appeared in robes normally worn by monks but a casual attire of
tee shirt underneath the robe, she said.
Both men offered a Chinese yellow
card which claims to apply family safety and protection and in return,
demanded for a donation. Knowing it was a sham, the lady refused to
handover any cash.
However, she noted her friend was one
of the victims who was conned into giving money for their fake
services. She was also told the fake monks refused to receive anything
less than $50 and were persistent.
The woman described both men to be
middle aged and usually prowled at Kampong Cina in Kuala Belait.
The fake Buddhist monks are currently
the hot topic among the Chinese communities in Belait District as one
tries to warn the other of the dishonest act.
There have been many cases similar to
these in the neighbouring countries.
In Sibu, East Malaysia recently,
there have been public complaints over the appearance of fake monks
who pretended to ask for donation.
This has already been forwarded as a
police case as stated in Malaysian news reports.
