Immigrant Workers In Brunei Living
in Shocking Conditions
Bandar Seri
Begawan – Some guest workers in Brunei live in horrendous
conditions hardly fit for humans, reports Radio Television Brunei in a
special feature.
Its camera crew, which visited
workers living quarters during recent raids, say that some of these
“bore closer resemblance to slums or shanty towns” and has urged
errant employers to rectify the situation
It reports: Development and
construction of a majority of the country's major projects has been
heavily reliant on the efforts of foreign workers.
Their physical toils and sweat has
resulted in the establishment of many roads, buildings, shops and much
more.
Yet for some of these workers sadly
have not been rewarded with their just dues.
In this second report, our news crew
exposes the injustices that they have to endure at the hands of their
employers.
Radio Television Brunei (RTB) has
also been in the frontlines with the law enforcers to record their
activities as well as the crimes committed.
Despite the repetitive warnings and
advice by these agencies to the employers of their responsibility for
providing the proper identity documents for their employees the
reality is that many of these warnings still fall on deaf ears.
Another responsibility that these
employers must fulfil is providing safe and humane living quarters, as
is stated in every employer's contract and agreement, in accordance to
the Labour Act of Brunei Darussalam.
40 percent of the country's labour
forces comprise of foreign workers who are heavily engaged in
construction, which is the country's third largest industry after
petroleum and gas production.
The raid last night proved that yet
once again our news crew documented terrible living conditions that as
these pictures vividly portray are not fit to live in.
In fact, some of these quarters bore
closer resemblance to slums or even shanty quarters, rather than
standard accommodation.
Once again, on behalf of the law
enforcement agencies, we would like to advise employers to pay closer
attention to the living quarters of their employees or face legal
prosecution, if they are caught, as well as other severe penalties if
convicted according to the laws of Brunei. -- Courtesy of Radio Television Brunei
