Bruneian To Defend Title In KK

Begawan - Brunei's SEA Games kayaker, Awang Ariffin Haji Zainal
will be defending the Men's Singles Open title in this year's KK City
Day/ Sutera Harbour Kayak Challenge 2004 to be held at the Sutera
Harbour Marina, Golf and Country Club in Kota Kinabalu on Feb 28.
The talented Bruneian is the current
record holder for the Men's Singles Open title with a time of
1.01.09s.
Awang
Ariffin who made it to the final of the canoe event in the recent SEA
Games in Vietnam had been associated with the sport since 13 years ago
and he was also once a member of the dragon boat racing team in
Brunei.
Awang
Ariffin and six other compatriots have been training hard since the
new year for this upcoming KK event.
He is aware that there will be many
talented and capable competitors this time around but nevertheless
will try his best to retain the title.
Cash prizes worth up to RM 15,000 are
up for grabs in this year's competition and the organisers are
expecting about 300 to 400 participants from Brunei, Sarawak and
Peninsular Malaysia as well as from the reciprocal and affiliated
clubs of Sutera Harbour, Marina, Golf and Country Club from Singapore,
Australia and Brunei.
The third edition of the kayak
challenge is jointly organised by the City Hall, Kota Kinabalu Kayak
Association, Sabah Youth Council, Youth and Sports Council, Sea Quest
Travel and Sutera Harbour Resort in conjunction with the 4th City Day
celebration.
The competition is open to all
individuals above 18 years old, while the newly introduced veteran
category to those above 50 years old as at January 1, 2004.
The registration fee is RM50 for the
Men's Singles Open and RM100 for the Men's Doubles, Mixed Doubles,
Junior's Doubles and Veteran Open Doubles.
An additional fee of RM5 will be
charged for late entries subject to the availability of space. The
deadline for entries is Feb 10.
