Bandar Seri Begawan - A water taxi driver who threw a brick at an ATM machine of the Islamic Bank of Brunei in order to release his stress and who attempted to steal cash from an ATM machine of HSBC was sentenced to 8 months imprisonment and received 2 strokes yesterday.

Ramlan Haji Ahmad, 30, also known as `Robot', pleaded guilty to committing mischief by causing damage amounting to $2,906 to the Islamic Bank of Brunei (IBB) ATM machine on December 27 last year between 6 am and 6.45 am.

The prosecuting officer, Shamshuddin Hj Kamaluddin, told the court that on December 27 last year Ramlan went out to work at about 6 am and stopped at `Tambing' near a fish market.

He then walked to the IBB ATM located at the IBB headquarters at Jalan Pemancha where he found a brick nearby and threw it at one of the ATM machines, intending to cause damage to it.

Three days after, the defendant went to the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) at Shakirin Complex in Kiulap and attempted to withdraw money from the ATM machine by putting an engine gasket into it.

However, the prosecutor said that his attempt failed as the police who were patrolling the area at that time stopped him. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
