Thefts Top List Of Last Year's Crimes

Bandar Seri Begawan - A total of 1,478 crimes against property were reported to the Criminal Investigation Department at the Police Headquarters in Gadong between January to November of 2003.

These crimes involved robberies, theft, break-ins, car theft and also money laundering.

According to statistics released yesterday, the highest number of cases reported was theft (904). Police investigations led to the arrest of 232 people and the arrests also helped police solve 181 of the theft cases.

There were 129 car thefts reported during the 11-month period out of which 67 cases were solved and 26 people were arrested in connection with the crime. Also high on the list of cases were house break-ins that reached 175 cases and resulted in 45 arrests.

Seventeen cases involved robbery and attempted robbery and six of these cases were solved and six arrests were made. All crimes in the list were those reported in the Brunei-Muara District. Those arrested involved both locals and foreigners.

The lone money laundering case is still under investigation by the Gadong CID.

Altogether 304 cases were successfully solved resulting in 349 arrests.

The police urged the public to be extra vigilant in protecting their property and. not to give opportunity for criminals to strike.
