Brunei And UK In Joint Defence
Commission
Bandar Seri
Begawan – Bilateral relationship between Brunei and the United
Kingdom on defence has found a concrete foundation through the Joint
Defence
Commission.
The commission ensures the
effectiveness and efficiency of matters pertaining to defence.
Awang
Haji Mohd Said, Acting Permanent Secretary of Policy and
Administration at the Ministry of Defence underlined this at a meeting
of the 3rd Joint Commission for Defence Cooperation between Brunei and
the United Kingdom yesterday.
The existence of the joint defence
commission has also ensured that the two sides have an understanding
on mutual defence requirements of both countries.
Awang
Haji Mohd Said reiterated that such an understanding has allowed the
fostering of even closer relationship between the two countries.
He added looking at the security
situation today, the presence of non-conventional threats such as
terrorism has pushed nations around the world to take whatever defence
precautions to preserve the safety and stability of their countries.
Such efforts are effectively
performed both bilaterally and multilaterally.
The joint defence commission
therefore, he said, could be seen to have such an effort towards peace
and stability.
He also believed that the joint
defence commission could be further utilised to assist in the
development of defence of both countries to cater to today's security
needs.
The two-day- meeting is a follow up
to the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on the Establishment
of Joint Commission for Defence Cooperation between Brunei and the
United Kingdom on December 31, 2002.
The MOU serves as a mechanism which
allows defence officials from both countries to hold in-depth
discussions on defence matters and in promoting mutual cooperation,
and understanding. -- Courtesy of Radio Television Brunei
