Awang Kassim presents his talk on 'Wetland Ecosystem'.
Some 80 students of Pengiran Anak
Puteri Masna Secondary School in Lambak Kanan acquired valuable
knowledge on the conservation of wetlands in Brunei Darussalam
yesterday.
A talk on 'Wetland Ecosystem' under
the protection and conservation management of Brunei Museum Department
was held at the school's library yesterday morning. It was presented
by Awang Kassim bin Ismail from the Natural History Section, Brunei
Museum.
Also present was the Public Relations
Officer of the Ministry of Education, Pengiran Haji Ismail bin Pg
Ibrahim.
Awang
Kassim disclosed that Brunei has about 138,000 hectares of wetlands
with an additional 50,000 hectares in the Brunei Bay area.
The four wetland areas namely
Merimbun Heritage Park, Pulau Berambang, Pulau Siarau and Pelong Rock
are under the management of Brunei Museum, he said.
Throughout the talk, he stressed that
wetlands are, biologically speaking, the most productive part of the
natural ecosystem. Without wetlands, many habitats would be extinct.
In an effort to teach students about
the importance of wetland conservation, more educational talks will he
held at other schools. It is hoped that students would take an
interest in this field and help conserve the wetlands of Brunei
Darussalam.
