Brunei Offers University
Scholarships To Bangladesh Students

Begawan – Brunei and Bangladesh have expressed satisfaction
with the excellent bilateral relations and close cooperation enjoyed
in various fields by both countries.
This was contained in a joint
statement issued at the conclusion of the official visit of the Prime
Minister of Bangladesh, Begum Khaleda Zia to Brunei.
According to the statement, Brunei
and Bangladesh share common perceptions on major regional and
international affairs and will continue to work together in the United
Nations and in other forums such as the Organisation of the Islamic
Conference, the Non-Aligned Movement and the Commonwealth.
The visit demonstrated the importance
that Brunei and Bangladesh attach to strengthening traditional
friendship and cooperation in socio-economic development in an
environment of peace and stability, the statement said.
During the official talks, bilateral
and International matters of common Interest and concern were
discussed.
These included cooperation in the
fields of trade, investment, labour and defence. The Bangladesh side
offered places for the Royal Brunet Armed Forces in the Defence
Services Command and Staff College and other Military Institutions in
Bangladesh.
In considering cooperation in-
economics, trade and Investment, the two sides agreed to expand trade
relations.
Brunei agreed to encourage its
private sector to invest in, and import from, Bangladesh.
Considering the active role of
Bangladeshi manpower in the development process of Brunei, the latter
agreed to consider the request to recruit more skilled and semi
skilled workers including professionals of different disciplines like
doctors, engineers, IT experts, nurses, pharmacists, accountants and
teachers from Bangladesh.
Brunei offered scholarships under the
Commonwealth for Bangladesh's students in the higher educational
institutions, including the Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD).
In order to create and manage an
environment that will encourage such cooperation, the two sides agreed
to establish a Joint Committee consisting of senior officials from
both Foreign Ministries.
It was agreed that the Joint
Committee would discuss all aspects pertaining to the formation of a
Joint Commission at the level of Foreign Ministers.
The Prime Minister of Bangladesh
expressed her sincere appreciation to His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal
Bolkiah, Sultan of Brunei for the support for the candidature of
Bangladesh for the post of the Secretary General of the Organization
of the Islamic Conference and Bangladesh's membership to the ASEAN
